She looked back as the "Heart-Wood" of the city finally succumbed to the fungal mutation. The Spire didn't collapse; it "Softened," melting into a giant, glowing mushroom that pulsed in the dark. The city was gone. The Union was no longer a place on a map; it was a "Cloud."

Astrid’s POV The headquarters of Woods Group had always intimidated me. Not because of its size, though the glass tower stretched nearly fifty floors into the skyline. Not because of its wealth, though billions of dollars flowed through its systems every year. It intimidated me because it represented something I had avoided for too long. Responsibility. As I stepped out of the elevator on the executive floor, I felt dozens of eyes briefly glance in my direction. Employees. Assistants. Managers. Some nodded respectfully.
