Vanessa’s pov, The next day I trained with the rest of the pack in the morning until Tomasso came for me after lunch. We walked to the gate, and I felt excited and curious about the spy mission. Tomasso had not spoken yet, but I followed him into the forest outside the property of Don Lorenzo. As soon as we reached the shadows of the trees, Tomasso transformed into his wolf form. His wolf was big with dark brown fur, but I recognized his kind ember eyes. I followed his lead and transformed into Spirit. Immediately I heard his voice speaking through the wolf bond, “Sorry I didn’t talk to you but with spy missions, it is only safe to exchange information in wolf form.”

Maybe the stories aren’t all that far off when they say Kitsune is a spirit. “We can work on it. Find ways to curb Kitsune’s blood lust. Anything else she likes? Or something you do that you can focus on instead?” I offered. A sly smile played across her lips. “We?” she asked. I chuckled. “Of everything you focused on that word.” I sighed.

I watched as they all fell limp and dropped to the ground. I started to move but Custard blocked my path the moment the light was headed towards us. These weren’t regular foxes. They were Spirit Foxes—fighters from the darkest parts of the woods. Around them, the air shimmered with leftover magic. One stepped forward. “Rane,” he said. “Why are you running with secrets hidden on you?” I said nothing. “Ugarh trusted you. Did he tell you what these messages would cost?”
