Stories filled with brave heroes and creatures of nightmares who sought to destroy castles and claim lives. Little did I know then, the true monsters of this world are so much more terrifying than what the darkest depths of our imaginations could conjure up.

I nodded and followed her to our little angels' room. Samantha tucked in Poppy, and I tucked in Violet. Poppy and Violet couldn't sleep without listening to bedtime stories, especially Poppy. I brought out the story we'd be reading tonight, "The Christmas Cookie," since Christmas was just a few weeks away. Samantha and I started reading the story, making it more real by adding sound effects with our mouths. Our little angels giggled, "awwn" ed, and pouted their lips until they fell asleep.

As she settled in beside him, Theo snuggled close, his small body seeking the warmth and comfort of her presence. "Mama Hazel, will you tell me a bedtime story?" Theo asked, his eyes filled with anticipation. Hazel smiled, her heart swelling with love for the sweet boy who had captured her heart. She began to weave a tale of magical adventures and brave heroes, her voice soft and soothing in the quiet of the night. As the story unfolded, Theo's eyelids grew heavy, his breathing slowing into the steady rhythm of sleep. Hazel watched over him, her hand resting on his back, feeling the gentle rise and fall of his chest with each breath.

Harry continues, nearly breathless, "Daddy said he was gonna tell me a superhero bedtime story! One with a hero that looks just like us. He promised!" Violet's voice softens. "Did he now? Well, that sounds like the best bedtime story ever. But, Harry..." Her tone shifts, firmer but still gentle. "It's late, baby. Way past your bedtime. You need to sleep, or you'll be too tired to play tomorrow." Harry's face falls for a second before he sighs dramatically. "Fine. But only if Daddy tells me the story." "I'm sure he will," Violet assures. "And, Harry?"

"Story time!" Lyra demanded, clutching her stuffed wolf. "The one about the King!" she requested. Alex sat in the rocking chair between their beds, stretching his long legs out. Zara leaned against the doorframe, listening. "Again?" Alex asked. "You know how it ends." he told them.

“Look, Mommy! That one’s a horse.” I smiled softly as I stepped into the room. “And that one is a penguin,” I told them as I stopped beside the bed. “Can I join you? I’ll tell you a bedtime story while we watch the show.” Becky immediately scooted closer to Naomi to make space for me. “Here, Daddy.”
