A moment later, a logo popped up, along with the words “The Island.” A British male voice started speaking, but the camera didn’t show the narrator. Instead, it showed scenes that looked like something out of a hunting show to start with. As I listened to the narrator recapping the last episode, one of the images featured a slightly overweight man grappling with a shorter black woman. He held her down, forcing her onto all fours before climbing on top of her.

“You really think it’s all real? The monsters?” Jenna swats my arm playfully. “Of course! We did the deep dive. Forums are full of people who’ve seen things. Shadows in the trees. Eyes in the water.” She leans in, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. “And get this—there was a whole group of tourists, like, a year ago? They all vanished here. Poof. He was stunned, his eyes widening as it moved lower to see a pair of dainty hands. But when he turned, the woman's face did not match her hands at all. She looked hideous, her hair like a bird's nest and her face filled with red spots that would make anyone scared.

“I didn’t get the chance to thank you.” Her breath shook. “Thank me? You kissed me without my permission,” she whispered. “You scared me. And now—now you’re here? Why? What do you want from me?” The corner of his mouth tilted, almost amused. “So you know who I am.” “You’re Adriano Greco,” she said, her voice trembling. “The monster people talk about.” He took another step closer. “Monster?” he repeated softly. “That’s what they call me?”
