I sniffed and wiped my nose with the back of my hand, then lowered myself to sit on the ground. The darkness had deepened, but my eyes adjusted, shapes slowly coming into view under the night sky. My body felt drained, heavy and weak. I leaned back until I was lying flat on the ground and staring up at the stars. They stretched endlessly and quietly across the sky. I watched in silence as I tried to breathe through the pain. As I lay there, my eyes traced the stars scattered across the sky. They shone quietly, each one bright and distant, like they belonged to a world far away from mine.

Friends, not knowing we had broken apart, filled my inbox with complaints. One of them told me Zachary and Tracy had rented out the entire amusement park for a date. He had spent 50 million dollars on fireworks by the river, lighting up the night for Tracy. They even stayed on a mountaintop until sunrise, sharing pictures on Instagram to parade their romance. I stared in silence at the photos our friends sent me. Could Zachary have forgotten that I had once done every one of those things in those photos with him? If he wanted to disgust me so much, how could he not feel the same?

“They’re gone, Elara. You did it. You saved them all.” ​I looked up at the sky one last time before my eyes closed. The violet glow was gone, replaced by the natural, darkening blue of a spring evening. But as the first real stars began to appear in the clear air, I noticed that one of them didn’t twinkle like the others. It stayed steady and cold—a single red eye watching us from the deep, unforgiving dark.

No "Night-Cycle" filters. The world simply turned away from the sun, and the stars came out. Millions of them. They were tiny, cold, and infinitely far away. We sat around the fire. They stood brightest and called to Kylie the loudest. It was as though they were asking her to choose among them which one she would have. " Don't cry, everything will be fine". she said Jayden stood next to his window staring out to the city drinking from his wine. He has been lonely since his last chat with Maya, although he sees her in the clubhouse whenever he comes around, he can't help but keep thinking of her and the night he claimed her, he doesn't know why he is suddenly attracted to her, and her intransigence, no woman dares to talk back at him the way Maya does. There was a knock on the door and his PA entered.

The nurse's scolding left Ethan frozen in place. His eyes were locked onto my stomach, his gaze turning red-rimmed. "How could this happen?" His voice was hoarse. "Everything was fine last night. It was just a minor earthquake. How could the baby be gone? Honey, you're lying to me, aren't you?" Even as he stared at my flattened abdomen, he clung to his delusion. I wished—desperately wished—that I was lying.
