I could feel it, tight and wrong, like a scar pulling at healthy skin. "You make it sound so easy," I said. "Easy?" He let out a short laugh, shaking his head. "No. Nothing about this is easy. Divorce isn't easy. Leaving isn't easy. Starting over isn't easy." He paused, his fingers drumming against the steering wheel. "But staying? Staying is worse. Staying will kill you slowly. Not all at once. Just a little bit every day, until one day you wake up and realize you don't recognize yourself anymore."
