He leaned on the backrest of one of the chairs, looking at her with a predatory fixity. "Oh! Wow, did you truly not find out, Darla?" Frederick mocked. "Your beloved and innocent stepson lost his stirrups completely because of the alcohol, murdered a man, and right now finds himself buried in a federal cell. The entire goddamn press is treating us like we're a circus of criminals." Darla was left completely disconcerted by the coldness of her oldest stepson. She turned her head suddenly toward me, searching to deny the information with a mother's desperation.

Stephanie’s POV: When I finished eating, I went back to my room since there was nothing else to occupy my time. I grabbed a book from the small stack on my desk and settled onto my bed, allowing myself to sink into the soft mattress. My body sprawled across the bed as I began to read. At least, I tried to read. The words blurred on the pages, refusing to stick in my mind. My thoughts wandered, drifting to places I didn’t want them to go—specifically, from one brother to another.

In my room, on the second floor, I had stood behind the floor-to-ceiling windows, enjoying the view of the private pool they were using. And there she was emerging from the pool, droplets of water glinting on her skin, and her wet hair swung behind her like a downpour. My eyes widened and my breath caught in my throat. Her bikini clung to her curves, accentuating her shape. As she tilted her head to twirl her hair, her eyes met mine, like time stood still, all I could do was stare. My heart had seized. Could she see me staring at her lustfully? Was I like Leo? Would I pass on the same trauma from her former stepdad? I didn't want our bond to break, What were all these thoughts?

“I don’t have time for this. What do you want, Stephanie?” Stephanie grinned. Her tone dripped with false innocence. “Oh, don’t be so hasty to run back to your little desk job. I have a favor to ask.” Elarie raised an eyebrow. “A favor?” “Yes,” Stephanie said with a bright smile that didn’t reach her eyes. “I need you to book me an appointment with Danreb Scott. Today.” Elarie stared at her for a moment, then laughed. It came as a sharp, mocking sound. “Are you serious?”

“There’s a book section over there. Let’s find you a nice steamy one.” She heads off towards an area of the store and I slowly follow her to a wall of books with scantly clad people on them. “Why are most of them cowboys or cops?” “Handcuffs and ropes,” she says easily and quickly. She pulls out a cowboy one and hands it to me before scanning the rest. “What’s it about?” I ask as I turn the book over.

I chirp giving her a wide smile. She doesn't respond, but simply looks away, turning pale. *** Days have passed since my shopping trip with my mother and today I'm spending the night with Miss Ann while mother works. Miss Ann is one of the nice ladies who work with mother. She watches me while mother works and will even tend to us when we are sick. I really like her! "Miss Ann, have you seen this book? It's one that mother got for me when we went out shopping. It's an old book on tactical warfare," I shout excitedly while practically shoving the book in her face.

Stephanie asked. I turned around to have a look at her, my hand held her shoulder intact. she had a sincere worries on her face, the irritation and annoyance that I felt dissipated immediately, her innocent look tugged at my heart which made me felt like an awful person.
