Steven said without resentment, savoring the moment just as I was. “You mean, I’m not dead?” I asked, confused. “I can go back?” “You never left.” Steven brushed another strand of my hair away from my face. All of a sudden, a baby’s cry sounded faintly behind me. “Jase …” I said. I looked over my shoulder, but there was nothing but darkness. Then, I turned back to Steven. “I have a son, Steven. Can you believe it?” Steven smiled as tears of joy filled his eyes. “Yes, I know. He’s beautiful,” he said, then added, “I wish that I could have given you a child.”

Then I pulled my suitcase behind me and walked downstairs. My father and Luke Paul sat on the leather sofas, talking calmly as if they were discussing an ordinary business. The moment my suitcase rolled across the marble floor, Luke slowly looked up. A proud, satisfied smile spread across Luke’s bandaged face as he stood and straightened his expensive suit. “Mr. and Mrs. Steven, I believe it’s time,” he said, though the arrogance in his voice made my skin crawl. He didn’t speak to my father like an equal. He spoke to him like a man talking to someone beneath him. “I’ll see you both again soon. Hopefully, by then, we’ll be ready for the wedding.”

Everyone was praising Steven for being so bold to come out despite his homophobic brother's remarks. I let out a groan and almost threw my phone across the room in anger. I remembered how he had placed his lips on mine earlier, and it made me even angrier than I was because nothing worked out as I had imagined. His reputation wasn't soiled, mine was. I was the homophobic stepbrother.

I was caught in tentative thoughts, scrambling for an answer when Steven spoke. “Only If you had not started attacking me with words, I would have introduced her sooner." He said, then turning to me. “This is Carly Williams and..." He paused, his dark, piercing eyes met mine. “She is my fiancee who I am marrying in two days." He revealed., and the atmosphere suddenly shifted as silence took over, and all I could hear was the heartbeat of my own heart.

As soon as Steven saw where they were, he made a beeline for Sandra and opened his arms for a hug which a stunned Sandra obliged. “Hi. How are you?” Steven said, once he pulled back and grinned at Sandra. “I'm great, Steven. Marie looked from Steven to Sandra as they rambled on, waiting for them to cue her in. What alternate universe was this, and what brilliant idea had her best friend given her husband that she didn't know about?
