I stood before she could say anything, the floor cold beneath my bare feet. “Now,” I continued, voice shaking but unbroken, “I’m choosing to become the monster who didn’t give anyone a chance.” I met her gaze fully then. “So I can be their chance.” The silence that followed felt alive. Heavy. Dangerous. Mae sucked in a breath. Rowan’s head snapped toward me, eyes sharp—but he said nothing. The Ancient One studied me for a long time. Not my face—my bones. My scars. The place where fear had once lived and been replaced by something harder.

“My son is out there, tied up with monsters planning God-knows-what, and she chose to keep it from me! Do you have any idea what I just overheard Amber plotting?!” That name dropped like a bomb. River flinched, Hailey’s face drained of color, and Peter froze. “What did you hear?” River asked, her voice small, almost trembling. I turned to them, my throat burning. “Amber. I heard her on the phone. She had the audacity to drug me and then walk into my room thinking I was asleep. I heard everything. Steven has been kidnapped. She’s planning to have River disfigured, scarred so badly that no one would want her again. And then she’ll kill Steven.”

I wasn’t paying attention to the TV. My attention was completely on Steven. If things worked out between Steven and my mom, he was probably going to be my stepdad. I didn’t know how things would go between us, but I was certain about one thing. I wasn’t going to stop fucking Steven anytime soon. “This girl is really clueless. How can she not tell the monster is behind her?” Steven said, talking about the horror film we were watching. “Look behind you!” I almost yelled, pointing at the screen.

Ethan Storm spoke in such a matter of fact voice. It infuriated Jake as he looked ready to screech at the older man, “What the hell is going on dad?” He questioned and his father knew that it would be a long story and he would have to repeat it more than a few times to let it sink in. Steven hung up the phone and walked to the main hall of the airport. Lately, Steven felt like he was unhinged, having suffered severe headaches over time as if his head was about to be blown off. During his sleep, he would have some outrageous dreams. Sometimes, he dreamed of being a gang leader, ordering his subordinates as he smoked. Sometimes, he was a patient who laid in bed as he waited for someone to take away his heart.

I stared at it, my lips set in a thin line. He was none other than Jonathan. Owner of a major game production company in City M. And I'd just saved his son!

I stared at Carina in shock. She gave me a smile loaded with meaning. "Isn't that the new tattoo design those street tattoo shops just rolled out?
