Larson glanced upstairs, set his newspaper down, and went to the door at an unhurried pace.
The moment Steven saw him, he bowed quickly. “I’m sorry to bother you so late.”
Mr. Larson watched him for a second and mentally added another label: sweet kid, but kind of a dummy.
Still… his prejudice was fading by the day.
Mr. Larson stepped aside and turned back toward the house. “Come in.”
Steven exhaled so hard it almost sounded like a sigh of relief.
He changed into the disposable house slippers and walked in. By the sofa, he froze, stiff with nerves, his face screaming that he had something on his mind.
