For the first time in history, my kind was being hunted. The humans terrified themselves with campfire stories of monsters who would hunt them and their children and suck their souls from their necks. It was like the witch trials all over again, only without the farcical trials and ridiculous displays of the dunking chair and other such idiocies. The ordeal of the cold water, that is what the most common practice of determining whether a woman was a witch or not, became known as. My people were afforded no such thing. Times had moved forward, or perhaps sideways would be more apt.

Then there were those who actually were witches and knew how to use magic but I didn't that back then. “Then again, that has only caused more whispers about you.” This guy was a talker, but that was good. He looked like he’d be happy to tell me anything. “Is that so? Like what?” He shrugged. "That you're a witch. That you were created by a witch. Just a lot of witch rumors, honestly." “I met a witch, Willow. She seemed nice, but I’m starting to get the idea werewolves and witches aren’t friends.” He drummed his hands against his thighs and nodded. “Have you heard about the Salem witch trials? Werewolves helped humans with that massacre. Of course, that was years ago. But hatred and grudges like that are passed down through generations, you know.”

Was my wolf getting stronger and wanting to release themselves? I put the TV on for background noise and open to the first page, making a conscious effort to ignore the voice. I needed to know more about the witch trials, maybe there is something that can help me and make going to the ball just a date rather than a mission and a date rolled into one. Thankfully, the book was mostly in English so I could actually read it. I dove into chapter 1 which from my understanding was about some trials that resulted in the deaths of 200 women in a place called Salem, I brief memory of learning about this in school sprang to mind.

I began to read, and was so taken by it, I decided to read it aloud to Caleb. “Listen to this,” I said. “‘In Salem, in 1692, a large group of teenage girls suddenly fell ill. Most of them lapsed into a fit of hysteria, and screamed out that they had been attacked by witches. Many of these girls went so far as to name the witches who were afflicting them. “Because their illnesses were so mysterious, and because many of these girls died suddenly and there was no other explanation for it, the townspeople fell into a frenzy. They hunted down the people accused of witchcraft.

“So if they stole the moonstone, they probably took it with them?” “Yes, that moonstone isn’t in the forest… I think.” I inhaled deeply. “When did the witches start to move into the human world?” “I have no idea… I have heard about Salem witch trial. The humans executed some witches. If we find out when that happened we can have an idea. Why don’t you search it up?” she said. I quickly picked up my phone and opened the search engine. The Salem witch trial took place between February and May of 1692. That was over 300 years ago.
