They had no idea how right they were. The interviewer leaned forward, her pen tapping lightly against her desk, a deliberate rhythm meant to appear casual. “Why lucky?” she asked, her eyebrows raised with intrigue. She smiled again—she liked this angle, I could tell. The humble, soft-spoken writer with a touching answer. Easy to package. Easy to sell. I returned her smile, careful to keep it gentle, steady. “Because I’m still here,” I said simply. “And because I get to tell the story.”

Shayla resisted longer, peppering me with last-minute questions about whether clouds slept and if frogs had birthdays. Lucas waited until the others were settled before speaking quietly. “Can you tell a story?” Something in his tone—hopeful, vulnerable—unlocked a memory deep inside me. “My mother used to tell me stories,” I said softly. “Would you like one of those?” Three heads nodded eagerly. So I began. I told them about the moon that fell in love with the sea but could never touch it, about the brave girl who taught the stars how to sing, about the fox who tricked winter into leaving early.

“Why isn’t mama telling the story? She is the one who says it at night. Why is she not here?” I exhaled slowly, because every question felt like another weight pressing down. Another answer I didn’t want to give, an answer that I couldn’t. I brushed her hair back gently, keeping my movements steady. “It’s going to be okay,” I said instead. “I am the one who will be telling you the stories from now on. Can that work for a while?” It was not an answer. Just… something that they can hold onto. A hope that they can think about as children, something that they can try to understand; even if it wasn’t enough of an answer.

'Why is that even funny?' 'Because, humans wouldn't know the truth if it hit them in the face like a tsunami,' he said. 'Truth is nothing but fiction, told by the greatest storytellers this world has ever known. Of course, they were also the best liars, but that's the real secret to great story-telling, isn't it? Possessing the ability to make people believe you. Stories become truths so powerful that people forget that the tale itself was so fantastical, it couldn't possibly have been real. They are stories that can captivate your heart and stay there for a very long time, sometimes forever." "That's amazing, then." "Yeah," she nodded. "You are my fairytale."

Thalia shakes her head in disagreement. "My mother told me the story about a million times, that is exactly how she appeared in the pictures." The story isn't entirely how it was written down, but then again what story is? The best proof of that is the many different versions written by people with different perspectives. It heavily depends on the narrator.

FINALLY, I gave a normal answer. “Oh… Ok dear, for why were you unconscious beside the river?
