“I’ll go back for Annie’s and mine.” Samuel stared at his dessert with obvious reluctance. I glanced down at mine—vanilla cake with a pale frosting, decorated with a sprig of mint. Barbara had clearly gone to considerable effort, though her targeted distribution seemed strange. “Dad doesn’t like strawberries,” Annie declared loudly once Barbara had left the room. “They make his tongue itchy.” “It’s fine,” Samuel muttered, poking at the cake with his fork but not taking a bite. What ever that is. "That sounds good," we reply and she pauses for a second. "You haven't had it, have you," she asks and we shake our head. "No, I haven't had many sweets.
