“He’s in the lower city. I can feel it.” “You’re going alone?” “I don’t need a fucking babysitter.” I heard him curse, but I didn’t stop. The lower city was a nightmare. Flames licked up the sides of wooden buildings. People ran through the streets clutching children and whatever they could carry. A few cultists who had been left behind tried to stop me. I cut them down without slowing. One of them grabbed my boot as he died. “Mercy… please…” I drove my blade through his throat. “You gave up mercy the second you followed that piece of shit.”

My heart sank. I gestured an apology to the manager and got up to leave. Before I even reached the first-floor reception area, I heard a shrill wailing that drew the attention of many employees. "Everyone, look! Look at this heartless man!" Sloane sat on the floor with her hair all disheveled, sobbing dramatically as tears and snot ran down her face. "My sister-in-law just died, and he's already running around with other women! He kicked our whole family out, including his sick mother-in-law! He stole our family's house and sold it for cash. He's trying to destroy us!"

I asked, freeing my wrist from his grasp. “Why did you get involved? They finally set their sight on someone else and you decide to play hero? This is unlike you.” He hissed, bending over to snatch my jacket from the other boy. “What is wrong with me? Or you mean what is wrong with all of you? Everyone just stood there and did nothing! Did you see what happened? They left, meaning if any of you have stood up to them then none of this would have gone on for too long.” “What?” He frowned, looking more confused. “Why are you talking in third person?”
