I teased, pointing across the lawn.
Brody and Thomas were on the other team, stretching and talking smack from afar. When they spotted us, they both made exaggerated threatening gestures—Thomas cracked his knuckles and Brody pretended to draw a bow and arrow.
“Bring it on, boys,” Sadie called back, laughing.
“Let’s go, Camp No Name!” I shouted, amped with adrenaline. I could barely hear my own thoughts over the bass from the nearby stage, the cheers from other campers, the bubble of beer-fueled excitement—but that was the point. I wasn’t here to overthink or feel sorry for myself.
