The first shock was the cold. Icy water, seawater from the Cinderfell harbor, poured into the chamber, swirling around their ankles and then their knees in moments. The air exploded from their lungs in a collective gasp, replaced by a knife-sharp cold that seared their throats.
Chaos erupted. Guards splashed, shouting, their voices echoing in a panicked din against the roaring water. The initial relief of Elira being alive was utterly erased by this new, more insidious threat.
