The fire had burned low, more ember than flame now, casting the room in deep reds and deeper shadows.
Johan turned back once more. Through the tall windows, snow was falling in earnest now. Thick, heavy flakes that would bury the world by morning. They caught what little light escaped the room, turning them briefly gold before they disappeared into darkness. The storm had finally arrived, patient as death, inevitable as ending.
"Until tomorrow," Johan whispered to the silence, to the snow, to the man who might not wake to see it.
