The ground was so hot that even through their thick, rubber-soled boots, Audrey could feel the soles beginning to soften.
"Don't look at the anchors directly!" Lucas warned, his light-arm glowing with a violent, unstable violet hue. "If you see the point where the light meets the iron, it’ll burn your retinas through your goggles."
They moved toward the first tether. It looked like a solid spear of golden energy, ten feet thick, vibrating with a low, bone-shaking hum. The air around the anchor was distorted, shimmering with the intense ozone of the Southern technology.
"How do we cut a beam of light?" one of the scouts whispered, his voice trembling.
