Following the left-hand path, they walked a few hundred yards and reached the foot of the mountain. At the end of the road, a dark cave appeared, surrounded by towering trees that would make it hard to spot if you were not looking carefully. Chantelle was delighted. "Mr. Lloyd, could this cave lead to the tomb?" Andrew looked at the ground and noticed that the small path seemed to have been carved out by people. It was very roughly made and uncomfortable to walk on, covered with vines and weeds that clearly had not been disturbed in ages.

He was surprised to find himself at the entrance to the air raid shelter behind Temple Road.

Dad looks up at us, saying his hellos as he finishes typing something on the computer and then standing, peering at Cole. “Updates?” “Yes,” Cole says, looking between us. “But fortunately or unfortunately, not more work. At least not right now. Injured parties from the caves are being airlifted directly to hospitals.” Dad raises his eyebrows, surprised. “Wait, why?” I ask, frowning at Cole. “What happened?” He sighs, shaking his head. “We lost Slaken.”

I said, my face buried between her breasts. "I second that," she said, her hand threading through my hair and tugging softly. I was nudged awake by Ted. "The bug found him." Instantly awake, I pushed myself up from the small cot to avoid waking Isabella. He led me back to the room where he was working. Now, his clean laptop sat on the table with Joseph lurking somewhere in the shadows. Ted leaned over his laptop and showed me a four-story building atop one of the slumped hills of the Lower City. He was standing outside it, sipping on Scotch. His eyes found the bug, but he looked away as though it was nothing.

The deeper we went, the stranger the forest became, the trees grew taller and the snow became thinner. Dark roots twisted across the ground like fingers. Teddy never hesitated, he clearly knew exactly where he was going. That frightened me more than anything. Eventually, the trees opened into a small clearing. A cave was in the side of the mountain. I stopped behind a tree and Teddy looked around. Then he pulled a small bag from beneath his coat. He opened it. Inside were fruits and several pieces of food carefully wrapped in cloth. He placed everything on the ground in front of the cave.

They go on walking past hills and mountains, past the rivers and now they come to a cave. “That place looks spookier, let’s take a look” Edward wants to have a look at the cave but Geri resists, Edward identify some human bones at the entrance of the cave, he identifies some army uniforms torn into pieces and knows something really bad had happened at this place, Geri knows it all but he does not speak, the cave was once his home, he is the one who killed the soldiers some time ago, he really does not want to recall everything that he was going on at that time.

I asked. Ted chuckled, the sound low and rough. “Nah. My mother died giving birth to me, but somehow, I slipped through the cracks. The system’s fucked up, and for some reason, I never got sent in. The rest,” he said with a wry grin, “is history.” He moved to retrieve the knife from the dartboard “Oh, I’m so sorry. That must have been hard, for you and your mom.” Hearing Ted’s story made my life feel almost luxurious in comparison. Sure, life had been cruel to me, but at least I hadn’t grown up in the unforgiving bars of a prison.
