Kelvin pressed a kiss to her temple, whispering fiercely, “Then we take our time. We protect the baby. We survive this. Dante won’t get to claim anything, not now, not ever.”
Ruby clutched his jacket, tears streaming freely. “But what if it’s… what if it’s him? What if Dante…”
Kelvin cut her off gently but firmly. “No. No what-ifs. Not here, not now. Only survival. Only truth. Only the next step. We face everything together. That’s all that matters.”
Outside, the sun rose higher, golden rays spilling through the windows, illuminating the room, casting shadows that stretched long and dark. For a brief moment, it felt like safety, like hope, like life could exist outside the terror.
