Surviving the World to Escape Him
My vision blurred at the edges, but I forced myself to focus, to keep moving and to stay ahead.
Up ahead, there an opening. Beyond the last line of houses, the green broke. The forest, freedom. Hope surged wild and desperate as I pushed harder. Ignoring the tearing of pain in my body. I could make it. I had to make it. the trees loomed closer, the shadows stretching wide, waiting to swallow me whole.
Something slammed into my back. the world dropped out from under me. I hit the ground hard, air ripping from my lungs as darkness burst across my vision. Before I could move, before I could even breathe. A weight pressed down on me. cold, trembling and wrong.
