I gasped loudly as my eyes snapped open with a small scream dying at my lips and my body immediately lifted up from the ground where it was. A bright light covering my sight.

Her thoughts were consumed by the overwhelming feeling of her blood boiling within her. "What's happening? What's wrong?" Archer's concern pierced through the chaos. Amani glanced at her trembling hands, her voice strained with equal parts affliction and bewilderment. "My body... it feels like it's on fire!" Amani crumpled to the ground, her body convulsing with a spine-chilling crackling sound as her back arched in unnatural contortions. Her spine twisted and elongated with each agonizing pop, reshaping her from within.

I tried to focus, to listen, but their words slipped through my grasp, fading into nothingness. Panic tightened in my chest. I couldn’t hear them. I always heard them. Something was wrong.
