His shoulders bunch, and he grimaces as if he’s straining against himself. And then it’s like someone flickers the lights on and off in rapid succession. He’s standing; he’s in mid-motion. His fangs glint; he’s gritting his blunt white teeth. And there’s a terrible sound—a garbled howl that rattles the dresser and the mirror on the wall. I scramble to the headboard, huddle as small as I can, my power gone. Something’s wrong. He flip-shifts so quickly I can’t track it. He becomes a blur. His naked body is a mirage.

A flicker of awareness, a flicker of will. Miyal's eyes, bloodshot and sunken, opened creakily, the barest whisper of recognition coming back to them. He gasped, his body fighting for air, his chest heaving up and down in shallowness gasps. His limbs quivered with the effort to move, to resist the crushing burden of fatigue that threatened to pull him into blackness.

Selene's steps slowed again. Not consciously. Just enough that her body reacted before her mind did. She frowned slightly. That wasn't what she had expected. "I thought it was pain" someone muttered. Someone laughed. "It is pain.. Not just pain. It's like your body stops asking permission." There was silence after that. Heavy. Uncomfortable.

The night flickered, the shadows danced, and I knew I shouldn't, but I couldn't push him away. He pulled me closer, his hands finding my waist, and I forgot all my doubts, my fears, the outside environment of this room. Demanding, ravenous, his tongue stroked my lips. I paused then gave in. The kiss grew strong and relentless. Though the scars, the betrayal, the silent truths, my body naturally reacted craving his warmth, yearning for the familiarity he embodied. All of a sudden, my skin seemed to flicker. Dancing like a flame caught in a wind, a flicker of light at the nape of my neck. I stopped still.

I leaned back against the pillows, eyes shut, waiting for the chemicals to fight the pain, hoping they might bring with them clear thinking. Silence in the room closed in, amplifying the thudding within my head. Seconds ticked. Then, inch by sickening inch, as a dirty movie brought to life in a darkroom, what occurred after the doorway began to materialize.
