Alexei falls into step on my other side at the base of the stairs, as if he simply appeared from the stone. “Tell me it’s deer,” I say. “Smelled wrong for deer,” he replies. “Too much iron. Too much… them.” My wolf presses harder against my skin, demanding to be let out. The eastern ridge is a teeth-line of rock and scrub. Tarek is there, eyes wide. “There,” he says, pointing. “Wind carried it up. I’ve never smelled anything like-”

Trembling, with bright eyes trained on mine. A girl. Riven The weaker wolf whines as I press my foot further into his neck. I’m relieved at the feeling of bones snapping underneath my weight, but Kate whips past me. My eyes travel to where she’s run off to, and I pull myself off of the wolf’s neck and press my feet into its chest instead. You’re not going anywhere, fucker. Kate is making herself appear bigger, hackles raised as she shields a girl. The girl is dressed in what looks like tattered rags, and her short blonde hair looks as if it’s been lopped off with a machete.

CHAPTER 1 PILOT Clara’s POV:

A child crying. He caught the scent he’d been looking for and he hurried through the trees, still careful just in case the others gathered there were not friendly. When he came through the trees, three wolves immediately turned and growled until they saw that he was a wolf as well. He lifted his head and issued a challenging growl in return. Two of the wolves immediately backed down, lowering their heads and showing their throats. The third kept his head held high.

Rather than duck away, I leap onto her tail and begin racing up her back. She screams again, blowing fire over her back, but I use her back ridges to block the heat. As soon as the fire recedes again, I take off running. I have no idea if this will work. None of the classes tell you ‘how’ to claim a dragon, only the traits of dragons. It’s up to the rider to figure out how to claim their dragon. And while this won’t be a proper claim, it might be what I need to subdue my angry girl. She tries to lift her head, to get a better angle to blow her fire on me, but the ceiling gets in her way again. I duck the debris that begins crashing down on her back as I make my way to the base of her neck.

I stuttered, not quite recovering from the shock of the beautiful sound of his voice. “My dominance,” he stated casually. I froze, with a brow raised. You're what now! “You can turn it off,” I said shocked, watching as he placed the book he was reading on the table. “Yes,” he said with a slight raise to the edge of his lips. I nodded to myself. “Uhm, okay. Yes, sure,” I said, glancing at him momentarily. This was the first conversation that I had ever had with the feared demon wolf and dear I say it was…nice?

I only managed to help her straighten up before I was yanked away by the tiger again. I recalled reading it once that a tiger enjoys toying with its prey before killing it, realizing once the animal decided he was done with the foreplay, it was going to tear me apart. I kicked yelled and tried to fight the animal off me but I was powerless especially now that it had enough foreplay, it towered over me and just as it was about to sink its fangs into me, it was suddenly flying into the air again. I jolted on my feet crashing into Hazel that lay a few feet away from me.

I leaned back in the seat and tried to make my voice sound normal. The door closed behind me, shutting out the world. Blake's strong and unique scent swept through the cabin. It wasn't just cologne. It was something natural—cedar, winter air, and the raw strength of a top-tier Alpha. My wolf stirred the second it hit me, letting out an excited low rumble inside my chest. A deep, instinctive craving rushed through my veins, urging me to move closer to the source of that scent. I curled my fingers tight without thinking, my nails digging into my palm. The small sting helped me stay grounded, even though my body still leaned toward him, just a little, without my permission.

“Lily, do you have any wishes for the new year?” Perhaps my expression stood out too much in the middle of all the celebration. Daniel suddenly called my name. “I want a raise,” I said. My voice wasn’t loud, but everyone heard it. The room suddenly fell silent. People slowly turned to look at me. The smile on Daniel’s face disappeared. “What did you say?” He walked down from the stage. He tossed the microphone aside, and it let out a sharp screech. “Say it again.” He stopped in front of me.
