We slipped past waiters and clinking glass and fake laughter until the hallway wrapped around us like silence finally remembered. It was dim. The light from antique sconces painted the walls in old gold. Quiet lived here. Finally. He stopped walking. I turned to face him—and that’s when I really saw it. His tie was completely undone now. His hair slightly tousled. His breath shaky. And his eyes—his beautiful, broken eyes—were glassy with pain. With whatever storm had been living inside him, waiting for a crack. “Matthew—” “Do you know what it’s like,” he interrupted, voice low and cracked, “loving someone who refuses to let go of their ghost?”
