Wolves watched from the trees, their eyes catching the fading light. The quarry opened up suddenly, a wide scar in the earth lit by torches and moonlight. Wolves gathered in a loose circle, their energy buzzing, volatile. Draven stood at the center. When he saw me, his smile widened. “Welcome,” he said. “The fault lines are finally breaking.” My wolf rose, fierce and unyielding. Whatever happened tonight, there would be no turning back.

My wolf went quiet, still, staring. I whispered without thinking, “How am I looking at you?” He let out a sharp laugh, bitter and broken. “Like I’m broken. Like you finally saw through the bullshit and all you found was a fucked-up mess.” My throat locked. My hand twitched like I wanted to touch him, to reach across that line, but I froze. My wolf pushed against me, whining, torn. “You’re not broken,” I whispered, my voice shaking. “You’re… you. And you don’t have to hide from me.”

He was at my side in a flash and held my hands when I heard the crash behind me. The motorbike. It crashed into the pole behind us. The biker fell just some inches away from me without a helmet. The crimson liquid flowed from his forehead and painted his whole face, red. I was never a fan of horror or gore. That was it. Slowly my eyes felt too weak to stay open to see anything happening. My ears lost all the power to hear any sound. The feeling of holding the puppy in my arms was also gone as soon as I met the darkness.

My breath came in ragged gasps, fury and despair coiling inside me like venom. “You…” I choked out, my voice a guttural snarl. “You broke me. How could you do this to me?” She didn’t deny it. But she wasn’t finished. “To bring you back,” she whispered, “there had to be an equivalent exchange.” Another vision. My wolf. Fenris. He stood tall and proud, his gray fur shimmering under the moonlight as he howled to the sky in excitement. Then… he was gone. Fading like ash scattered by the wind.

Those months spent in the darkness, powerless as my assailant, always cloaked in thick shadow, tore at my flesh and shattered my bones, had irrevocably fucked with my mind. It had broken something deep within me, and it had taken me quite some time to realize that I liked myself better this way. I liked being broken. What mattered even more was that the little wolf liked me this way too. There was darkness in her, secrets buried in her heart that I was determined to uncover. On this front, I could be patient. I could wait until she trusted me enough to bear the fragments of her broken heart. Only then would I claim them and meld them into my own.

"I am not broken—" "You are barely conscious, poisoned with silver, bleeding profusely, and being hunted by both your former pack and a rogue band. “Moon forgive us, what have we become.” And in that moment, as the last echo of the joined howl tore into the sky, the moon itself split with a crack like shattering stone, a scar of darkness streaking across its pale surface, a wound that every wolf felt in their bones. The silence that followed was worse than the sound, heavy and absolute, and when Fenric lowered his head his eyes blazed with fire that no wolf could deny. His voice, quiet yet immovable, carried across the fractured Pack. “The Cycle is broken.”

The wolf drops and doesn’t get back up. The third wolf sees this and tries to run back toward the broken window but the golden wolf is already moving and it catches the gray wolf by the back leg and I hear the snap from across the room. The gray wolf yelps and tries to crawl away with its broken leg dragging and the golden wolf follows at a walk like it has all the time in the world and I should close my eyes but I can’t because I need to see this, I need to understand what I’m dealing with.
