He was acting like a perfect husband and a perfect stepfather. It was 12:00 AM. The house was covered in total darkness and silent. I lay in bed, staring at the ceiling. Everything had turned around even before it started. In forty-eight hours, I would be hundreds of miles away. The sweetness I had just discovered—the dark heat of Vaughan—would be over.
