The diner sat ten minutes outside the property, off a two-lane road lined with bare trees and old fence posts. It was small. Local. The kind of place with faded sports posters on the wall and a handwritten “TODAY’S SPECIAL” sign by the register.

The same diner everyone was talking about. I couldn't wait to eat something. As I stepped into the diner, I was instantly enveloped by the sweet smell of ranch. I found a seat, and a waitress instantly made her way towards me. “Hello, welcome to Too hot to handle. What can I get you?” “Um, something enough to feed two hungry bulls.” I said. The blonde blinked. “What?” “That was a joke. Um… I'd like to order fries, burgers, and wings. Extra portion for each.”

I had just been discharged from the hospital when I got a message about a team dinner. My manager, Robert Spradlin, had specifically emphasized that attendance wasn't optional. When I arrived at the private room at the restaurant, I froze at the sight of the table full of spicy dishes, taken aback. Clutching my stomach, I tried to keep my tone calm. The younger man with cold eyes was named James and he worked in acquisitions and he watched me the entire meal like he was trying to figure out what game I was playing. The other three were forgettable, they agreed with everything Nathaniel said and they did not matter. Dinner took two hours. By the end of it I wanted to leave but I stayed because leaving early would look weak and I could not afford to look weak in front of these men.

The diner room shifts from angry grumbles to quiet gratitude as the guards take the cash, slide out of their booths, and slip out of the doors with hesitant smiles. Moments later, the once-bustling kitchen stands hollow—emptied out like an empty stage waiting for its lead actor to walk on. Part of my wolf wants to slide out of the back door before things escalate any further, but the untouched red sauce sitting right in front of my face says otherwise.
