Maya stepped forward beside me, her translucent hand flickering. "He’s a ghost, Kael. A placeholder."
"No," the double said, his eyes turning to her with a cold, analytical light. "I am the version the audience wants. I am the hero who survives the fire and walks into the sequel alone. You, Maya, are the tragic motivation. You have to die so I can matter."
