I sighed and mustered my strength to pick it up. It was a text from Marcus. "Where have you been hiding? I know I was a little harsh that day, but you should've calmed down by now. Stop with this tantrum, and apologize to Janae. We can act like nothing happened! Also, don't forget about our engagement ceremony tomorrow." My strength left me, and my phone fell to the floor after slipping from my hand. I'd almost forgotten Marcus and I were supposed to be getting engaged the following day. I'd once looked forward to this day more than anything in the world. Now, it was so close and yet so far.

My feet dangled several feet above the ground. “Shit,” I cursed under my breath, panic clawing at my chest. Going back wasn’t an option. Closing my eyes, I took a deep breath and let go. The fall was quick but brutal. I landed hard, my ankle twisting with a sickening crunch. Pain shot through me, and I clamped a hand over my mouth to stifle a scream. Tears welled in my eyes as I lay there, the cold earth seeping into my bones.

Roy, standing over the edge, takes a step forward and falls. With that, Nova moves. A blur of black dropping from the tower. The war drums are roaring silently. But in the hearts of those below, judgement day has arrived for these fools.

The werewolves howled in frustration from above, their cries echoing through the night. John fell, the world spinning around him. It was a terrifying freefall into the void, and for a moment, he wondered if he had made a grave mistake. But then, as he plunged deeper into the darkness, he saw a glimmer of hope. A narrow ledge jutted out from the cliff face, and he reached out desperately, fingers scrambling for purchase.

Or maybe his fears were different. We walked on. The second trap was a pit. Neal stepped on a patch of ground that looked solid. It was not. The earth gave way beneath him. He fell, his arms flailing. I grabbed his wrist. Noah grabbed mine. We pulled him back just as a dark, hungry void opened below. It was not a hole in the ground. It was a hole in reality. A spiritual void. If he had fallen in, he would not have died. He would have simply... ceased. Unmade.

Daniel’s niece, Veronica, was the first to raise her phone and scream. Then cheers followed one after another. “Wow! Veronica is right! I got fifty thousand too!” “Same here! The company really delivered this year!” “Mr. Aster is so generous! Hard work pays off! Step— “Ah!” I slipped again. Second fall. This time my hand hit the stone. Not too hard.
