Fang moves so fast I barely catch the blur, he grabs my father by the front of his shirt and slams him into the wall so hard the pictures rattle. “You come near her again,” Fang growls, “and I will rip your throat out.” My mother gasps, reaching for my father, but she doesn’t try to pull Fang off not really, she just watches, calculating. My father remains infuriatingly calm. “You can’t keep her forever, Fang.” “Watch me.” They stare at each other for a long, heavy beat. Then my mother smooths her hair and lifts her chin. “We’ll be back,” she says, whisper soft but venomous. “Rebel deserves better than a life in this den.”
