Iona leaned closer to the hearth, enjoying its warmth.
Fiona grabbed the wooden bucket and headed outside through the door leading to the yard.
When the door closed, and Iona was left alone in the kitchen, she straightened her body, looked at the door with a smug grin, and soliloquized, "No one is going to make me a handmaid, Mother."
The day passed with Iona sitting in front of the fire, warming her shivering bones, while Fiona, exhausted and panting, constantly wiped her sweaty forehead on her apron.
