"Let's return to our country." Just like that, Marcus and I secretly returned to our country. After dropping him off at Lambert Manor, I headed to Lucy's place right away. The sight of Cher's tear-streaked face made me visibly relax. "Stop crying, Cher. At this rate, you'll become a pufferfish from all the crying!"

He punched the Golem's leg. WITHER. The obsidian turned to grey dust where Jack hit it. The Golem stumbled. "It's working!" Hyena shouted. "Hit the core!" The Golem turned, focusing on Jack. It sensed the threat. It raised its foot to stomp Jack into paste. "Marcus!" Jack yelled. BRRRRRRT! Marcus opened fire, aiming not at the armor, but at the Golem's glowing eye slit. The Golem flinched, blinded for a second.

I nodded. "Your wish is my command, my Queen. I'll take my blindfold now," I warned everybody else, and touched the knot Sohan made before then began to unmake it. Folding it and putting it on my lap, I blinked, getting used to the light again. I heard lots of gasps, probably because most people here have never seen my eyes, they must be mesmerized.

Chapter 39 As Keratin gazed at the golem, he sensed it. It was a nagging feeling that refused to abate. The more he stared at him, the more it became as clear as the sky was blue. The golem nursed a secret. He knew something they did not. The sneaky feeling became a roaring conviction, the more he gazed at him. Why did the golem not take his eyes off him and Germaine? Keratin broke his gaze from him and gazed into the eyes of Germaine, wishing with all his might, his plan worked. Now, more than ever, he needed the mind link to work.

assemble. A giant hand made of jagged ice slammed onto the ground. Then a torso. Then a head, faceless and smooth, save for two glowing blue cracks for eyes. It stood twelve feet tall. A Golem of pure permafrost. The Beast that does not bleed. "Get back!" Killian roared, shoving me behind a pillar of rock. The Golem turned its massive head toward us. It opened its mouth—a cavern of sharp icicles—and let out a sound that wasn't a roar, but the screech of grinding glaciers.

Before running towards my mate to keep her from falling, an enormous hand reached out from the holes. A second hand rose up and took place next to the first, the creatures that Aerin and Pernwél had invoked were pulling themselves up from the bowels of the earth. The golems were made from stone and roots holding the panels of their strong body together, junctions between the stones were filled by clay and moss. They were the same height as the mountain giants and made their way onto them, with controlled steps, trying to not kill any more of ours. The Jade stone that functioned as their heart shone bright, it blinded me as I tried to look directly at it.

Eyes filled her eyes and continued to stream down her cheeks. The ground below us rumbled and liquid swarmed over my shoes. The bodies moved, heads, arms, legs, swarmed into a clump beside us. They clustered together and began to form a human the bottom of a golem, but by the size of it’s legs it would be as tall as the dog monster that faced off against Viktor. We couldn’t let it complete itself, we couldn’t let it become whole.

From the shadows, they rose. The first golem scraped its way upright, its body a patchwork of stone and rusted armor, stitched together with glowing lines of runes. Two more followed, each taller than Caelum, each exhaling the heavy stink of old Everley magic. Their eyes weren’t eyes at all but hollow sockets burning with white fire. They didn’t move like lumbering constructs; they stalked, deliberate and precise, as if the Trial had given them a single command: break the heirs.

The smoke-face of the Devourer hovered in the air, then shot toward the Stone Golem. "With this body, I do not need to hide!" The smoke seeped into the magma fissures in the golem’s chest. The golem looked up, letting out a roar that vibrated even more intensely. The magma cracks in its body widened, radiating a searing heat. Now it was controlled directly by the Devourer. "Everyone, fall back!" the High Priestess ordered. But Siron didn't move. He stood between the unconscious Gideon and the injured Stefan, facing the giant golem. In his mind, he heard Morat and Lyra arguing rapidly.

Arlo gets off the couch, finally, and comes and sits between us and looks up at both of us with the one white ear and the amber eyes and the complete confidence of a dog who considers himself central to all important decisions. He is not wrong.
