Everything that feels wrong in her eyes she will cover up with little lies so that it will look better in her eyes. Even in the last two weeks, she had repeatedly lied to Mrs. Eden. First about not going to work because she was sick for two days, then followed by other lies the next day when she came into the office. The one lie she concocted at the start has created many more lies over the past two weeks to cover up other lies she has created before. So lying is really addictive. Once you tell a lie, then you will continue to lie to cover up the first lie. Great!

I connected my phone to the car radio and scrolled through my music. “I have a song for you.” The first notes of “Beautiful Surprise” by India Arie flowed through the truck and he went quiet as he listened. As the words registered a grin spread across his face. His smiles always made me feel better. “Thank you. I loved it,” he confessed as the final notes rang out.

His voice remains calm. Controlled. That somehow makes it worse. I stare out the glass windows of my office. The city stretches endlessly below. Busy. Loud. Alive. Meanwhile my heart suddenly feels too loud inside my chest. “You left,” I say quietly. Another pause. Then— “I did.” No excuses. No lies. No attempt to deny it. And somehow that annoys me even more. “You don’t get points for honesty now.” “I know that too.” God. Why does he sound like this?
