(Isabella’s POV) The safe house was a tomb, filled with the ghosts of a life that wasn't mine. Dust sheets covered the heavy, ornate furniture, and the air was thick with the stale, stagnant scent of time. The brutal, adrenaline fueled escape from Bianchi’s gala felt a world away, but the true horror of the night was just beginning to settle in my bones, a cold, creeping dread that no locked door could keep out.

The deafening silence only intensifies my fear, leaving me with a sinking feeling that something truly horrific has occurred. I took my step after standing paralyzed for so long, one step at a time, slowly. And as my feet move, the scene before my eyes gets much more horrifying. The strong scent of mothballs and dust filled the house. There was a lounge to the left with chairs covered in faded red velvet in front of a fireplace. I squinted through the brightness. Siobhanny screamed. Then the House of Heights came tumbling down. DAZED, I BLINKED MY EYES OPEN TO DARKNESS. Then I coughed against the stone dust, scrabbling to free myself from the fallen masonry and roof beams. My head ached, and blood dribbled down my throat. Frogs’ toes, Mischief taking back his magic had pulled down the entire House of Heights that had been my family’s home — the Wolve Winner’s home — for over four hundred years.

"Just tell me, g*dammit!" "Introducing the Halls of Horror!" He pointed at the entrance that she'd completely missed passing by. The entrance to the Halls of Horror was shaped like the mouth of a cave. Over the top, the image of a zombie as well as the words "Hall of Horror" was hung up in splashes of black and green. Just then there was a growl from inside. A kid who'd been standing close by with his back to the cave screamed and yeeted off to his daddy, grabbing onto his legs.

Decades, even. Lucas was at daycare, Colt was out running errands, and the house had fallen into that eerie kind of silence that made her skin prickle. Maybe that’s why she’d come to the door at all. Maybe part of her needed to remember. Or maybe it was because she’d heard something—faint but sharp—last night. Like something shifting beneath the floorboards. She opened the door. “OH MY GOD I HATE THIS HOUSE.” From the distance, the House hummed irritably—offended. “Sorry, Brenda!” Samantha yelled. The House buzzed once—accepting the apology. --- Then the hum changed. Turned sharp. Frantic. Panicked. Samantha stiffened. “Lucien. That’s Brenda. What is she saying?” I listened. Varyn House was screaming through the roots of the earth. One word. Over and over. I didn't see it coming because my eyes were sorely on Sky and that gave Soliaire the perfect diversion.
