The Inheritance Games Kindle Novels & Stories

“Canada was an opportunity. But here… here is legacy.” Cesare nodded approvingly, his tone firm with fatherly pride. “Precisely. The world may not yet realize it, but you are a great Giovanni. Our bloodline was built to reign. And in time, you will marry a man worthy of our name and expand our empire even further.” The faintest flicker of impatience tugged at Rhea’s lips, but she masked it with another sip of wine. They think of legacy. I think of destiny. My destiny with Montez.

“Mama… she said the other one is awake now. And she’s looking for you.” Savannah held her child close, heart clanging against her ribs. Colton entered, drawn by instinct. “What is it?” “She’s remembering things she’s never been told,” Savannah whispered. Colton looked at Eva’s pale face. “It’s started.” Savannah’s voice was hollow. “What has?” He looked between them. “The inheritance. Not of blood. Of memory.” Eva closed her eyes and said, “The girl in glass is bleeding again.”

"It's me." My tone was firm, but there was helplessness in it, too. The three of them were so angry that they nearly hit me. "We think it's you, too, but the point is the Coxes will kill you!" They paced around anxiously. "They clearly already drafted the billion-dollar inheritance agreement. They're just waiting for the heiress to sign it. So why would they kill you the moment you're confirmed as the heiress?" Rebecca clutched her head.

I look at her. "Why?" "Magic." She says it like the answer should be obvious. "Girls tend to inherit the magical bloodline more consistently. Boys can inherit it, but it's much less common." She pauses. "So if your mother was part witch..." I stare at her. "Then having a girl first actually makes sense." I think about it. She's right. My parents had me first. And now I'm having a girl. "It's strange." "What is?" "That I've spent my entire life thinking there was something unusual about me..."

My eyes narrrowed. “Fourteen down,” Grandma said, her voice wobbling. “‘Inheritance.’ Eleven letters.” My head snapped toward her. She looked back at me with wide innocent eyes and I kicked the bed frame again. Nate filled in INHERITANCE without noticing anything. Grandma watched him write with desperate tenderness, her eyes going from his hands to my stomach and back, over and over. I just stared at the crossword until the letters blurred. Then Nate dropped his pen. It rolled off the tray and under Grandma’s bed.

I said, the words tasting like ash. "Do you know what it is?" he pressed, his voice a low thrum that vibrated in the quiet room. My mind flashed to before. My father's vague warning about a "secret inheritance" tied to my marriage to Enid. He’d never given details. I’d been too angry, too desperate to escape, to ask. I swallowed, my throat dry. "What other inheritance? It’s the one you’re sitting on." I gestured weakly at his chair, at the empire of Kane Global surrounding us. "That seat belongs to me. That’s what he promised, and you already have it."

But all he’d gotten was a bunch of information he couldn’t decipher. The only thing he fully understood were the sentences that ended the letter: “…It's only right that you also have the chance to fight for the Inheritance. You’ll be competing against your half-brother. May the best man win. You always were and always will be a Hunter.” Then a warning: “Do not show this to anyone.” Always a Hunter. Yeah, right. Scott ground his teeth. Fresh pain drained the warmth from his chest. He only joined the inheritance race because he figured he could get answers about his mother.

“He believed people are their truest selves under pressure. In a game. He designed one for us.” She held up the key. “There are others. He said if we find them all before the seventy-two hours are up, we unlock the ‘true inheritance.’ Something beyond the money.” Liam felt a prickle of unease. This was exactly the kind of convoluted game Arthur had loved. A test. Always a test. “And if we don’t?” Isabelle’s gaze was steady. “Then we get the money and go our separate ways, I suppose. Having proven his point—that we couldn’t see it through together.” She pocketed the key. “But I don’t like to lose.”

“Then why do you know my thoughts before I speak them?” My stomach twisted. He wasn’t wrong. “I buried you,” I hissed. “You buried the sin,” Dark Kael answered. “But the sinner continued walking.” I stumbled back like he slapped me. The Revenant spoke then, voice like thunder rolling through bone. “You deny inheritance. Yet you cannot deny blood.” “Inheritance of what?” I asked. The shadows shook. Then the Revenant smiled. “Of death.” Dark power pulsed around me, cold and frightening and familiar. It felt like a hand holding my heartbeat, squeezing until my ribs shook.

I nearly crushed my phone in my hand. One photo after another flicked past my screen, and then I saw it: Serena Ashford’s necklace. That ruby pendant was our family’s heirloom. It had been passed down for more than a hundred generations, but now it was hanging around the neck of an outsider? I remembered it clearly. On Lila’s eighteenth birthday, I had placed it around her neck myself. My pulse thundered as I dialed the number for Lila’s university, words spilling out before I could stop myself. I demanded to know about her enrollment.
