So I'm one of those people who bounced off 'Irregular at Magic High' after giving it a real shot. The magic system is genuinely intricate and the world-building has a cool, almost hard sci-fi vibe to it, which is a fascinating angle for a fantasy story. But man, the protagonist Tatsuya just killed it for me. He's so overpowered and emotionally detached that it drained all the tension out of most conflicts for my taste. It felt less like watching a character struggle and grow and more like watching a spreadsheet execute perfect logic.
If you're a fantasy fan who really loves dissecting intricate systems and enjoys a 'competence porn' vibe, you might get a kick out of it. The way magic is treated as a technical discipline is unique. But if your fantasy love is rooted in character-driven journeys, emotional stakes, or party dynamics, this might leave you cold. I kept reading hoping for a crack in Tatsuya's façade or a real threat to emerge, and it just never landed for me the way I wanted.
