Even if someone tries to help her, it would prove too difficult. "The 4th Prince has arrived." One of the guards announced. I was the last one to walk in the room so my shock was immense when I saw how the former Empress was being kept. She had an ill-fitting gown on and she was ragged and a bit dirty. I wasn't expecting for her to be like this. At the very least, I expected that she was being treated fairly well. This was definitely out of my expectations.

Was she really insane? But now it finally makes sense. When I first read the original novel, the part about the empress being indifferent to Alistair confused me so much. I mean, if you're an empress, isn't that having your son as the crown prince is the biggest blessing? But if Alistair wasn't the emperor's son, it somehow makes sense. I came to the conclusion that the empress wasn't greedy for the throne. If she was, no matter whose son Alistair was, she'd still dote on him, since he's going to be the next emperor.

ACCORDING to the original plot of the novel, if I remember it correctly, and I still do, the Empress who was furious that the assassin she hired has fallen in love with the Crown Prince, she used her son, the 2nd Prince to approach the young lady (assassin) and find out more about her. She wanted her darkest secrets, something she could use to shackler her once again. But despite all her efforts, not only did her son fall in love with her, but Claire--despite having the same name as my enemy--was completely freed from her shackles and lived by her own rules. The Crown Prince and Claire overcame all the obstacles and lived happily ever after.

The last candle drowns on my desk—its flame stretching upward in one final, desperate moment before collapsing into itself. I will never love. Not truly. Empresses do not get to love. Do not get to be loved. This will be my price. And I will pay it—again and again—if it means keeping him close, if it means nothing ever changes. My gaze drifts back to the first Emperor's portrait. When I was ready to leave the mansion, Lisa put on the red veil over my head and she guided me until we reached the entrance. Alexander’s mother, Aunt Catherine, insisted that we must hold the ceremony at the mansion’s wide garden so that was all we did. Since the garden was a few minutes away from the main entrance, a palanquin was waiting for my arrival. Seeing all of the men and women wearing dresses that were similar to the one we wore back in Oliviland just made me feel nostalgic. With my search still having no progress at all, I started to feel like my return back to the immortal realm would take longer than I expected.
