She looked at her free hand, at the gnarled root curving out of the ground beside her, and pressed her fingers against it without really thinking about it. “Please don’t run from me, Honor.” His thumb moved over her knuckles. “I know it’s a lot. I know they’re a lot. But they will love you and they will guard you. Every single one of them.” He paused. “And someday soon you will be my Luna.” She looked at him. “What’s a Luna?” He almost smiled. “One thing at a time.”

I stepped forward, calm and steady. “Fine,” I said. He smirked. “But you will not receive a single thing.” His face fell. “What?” I turned to the mother. “Everything you asked for, the land, the goats, I will give to her. For the baby.” The crowd gasped. The man’s jaw dropped open. “You….you can’t do that!” I looked at him coldly. “I am the Luna. I can.” His face turned red with rage. “You’re making me look like a fool!”
