The knowledge terrifies me more than the darkness does. The pillars stand in what might have once been a clearing, though now it's choked with mist that clings to everything, dampening sound and obscuring vision. Beyond the circle, I can make out the suggestion of ruins—crumbled walls, fallen archways, the skeleton of something that was once grand. The mist moves strangely here, not drifting but pulsing, as if it's breathing.

"Elowen, please don't make any more trouble! Let's go. I'll take you home..." Elowen turns her head slowly, glaring at Marlowe before letting out a dark, breathless laugh. "Celine, please..." Marlowe begs, trying to play the benevolent sister for the audience. She wraps her arms around Elowen in a tight embrace, pulling Elowen’s face against her shoulder. "Let me take you home so we can talk about it, okay? Don't cry... Shh... I know you're distressed, but you will get over this. Let's go..."

Marlowe’s POV "Sign the document." He said to me as I stared at both of them. He climbed out of bed naked and wrapped a robe around himself. "What is this about?" I asked him in a shaky voice as a premonition came over me. “Are you afraid of the paper?” Tessy said to me with a sneer as her lips curled into a smirk. She stood and came to me, her breasts bare, nipple pointing as she pushed the envelope across the table towards me. “Are you frightened, Miss Marlowe?”

The sound of a man who knew exactly how much a secret was worth. “You took your time,” the voice said. Marrow. Hearing him was like feeling an old scar start to ache again. “I had to make sure you weren't a trap,” I said, my voice like iron. “Dead men don't usually send signals.” There was a short, dry sound that might have been a laugh. “In Black Tide,” Marrow said, “it’s the dead men who usually live the longest.” I leaned back, my eyes fixed on the screen even though there was no face to see. Marrow never showed himself, he was a shadow among shadows.

Marlowe was watching both of us with the patience of someone who'd learned to wait. "What's in the letters that he'd actually use," I said finally. "Specifically. Not everything—just the thing he'd lead with." Marlowe looked at the table for a moment. "There's a section—" he stopped, recalibrated. "About six months in. I was in a bad place. Not—" he glanced at me briefly, then Aaron, "—not dangerous. Just low. The kind of low that's hard to write about without it sounding worse than it was. I wrote about it because I needed to put it somewhere and I thought I was putting it somewhere safe."

I asked, growing increasingly more concerned. "We don't know what happened, but Chase found them. Agent Marks was found dead at the scene." "WHAT?!" I unknowingly shouted, altering Jessica and waking Maverick from his sleep. Maverick began to cry, and Jessica picked him up, holding him in a tight hug. She looked over at me, but I didn't miss the concerned expression on her face. I could tell that she knew that something was wrong, and was desperate to find out what had happened. I switched the phone over to speaker phone, knowing that Jessica desperately wanted to know what had happened. Thankfully, Maverick was too young to understand what was going on.
