“I need more than water.” There was a knock at the door. She stiffened. “Come.” Lady Marrow slipped in, moving like a shadow across the threshold. She wore her deep violet cloak, the sigil of her house embroidered near the collar. Without a word, she crossed the room and knelt beside Blythe, taking her wrist gently between cool fingers. “Your pulse is steady,” Marrow murmured. “That’s more than I expected.” Blythe’s lips curved faintly. “Disappointed?”

“Code Severance.” And Derek froze but not stopped completely because he was still crouched over Marlowe, claws pinning the man’s shoulder to the wall and his eyes cut straight to me. Marlowe coughed, blood dribbling down his chin, and sneered even while half his body was being shredded open. “You don’t even know what that means, girl.” “Shut up!” My voice cracked. I stumbled forward, not even realizing I’d moved until I was grabbing at Derek’s arm, hot blood smearing against my palm. “Don’t kill him yet, please, don’t… you can’t—”

The sound of a man who knew exactly how much a secret was worth. “You took your time,” the voice said. Marrow. Hearing him was like feeling an old scar start to ache again. “I had to make sure you weren't a trap,” I said, my voice like iron. “Dead men don't usually send signals.” There was a short, dry sound that might have been a laugh. “In Black Tide,” Marrow said, “it’s the dead men who usually live the longest.” I leaned back, my eyes fixed on the screen even though there was no face to see. Marrow never showed himself, he was a shadow among shadows.

Marlowe was watching both of us with the patience of someone who'd learned to wait. "What's in the letters that he'd actually use," I said finally. "Specifically. Not everything—just the thing he'd lead with." Marlowe looked at the table for a moment. "There's a section—" he stopped, recalibrated. "About six months in. I was in a bad place. Not—" he glanced at me briefly, then Aaron, "—not dangerous. Just low. The kind of low that's hard to write about without it sounding worse than it was. I wrote about it because I needed to put it somewhere and I thought I was putting it somewhere safe."

I remark, not sure what the point was. "Maiden Notes is an anagram for Damian Stone." Damian remarks looking highly of himself. "So what? So you own the building. Big freaking deal. That still doesn't explain why you're here." Damian, however, looks over at me with a weird expression on his face, almost as if he finds it sexy that I continue to challenge him.

Marley walked through a narrow pathway using a face cap to hide her face. She clenched the bag dangling from her shoulder tightly and passed a group of men who were drinking and whispering to one another. Even the hunters’ noises pause, as if the woods itself is holding its breath. “What… what is this?” I whisper. Kaelen lowers his voice. “The Veil Path. Only ancient blood can open it.” Before I can protest, he grabs my wrist. The bark splits open. A portal of swirling shadow and moonlight yawns before us. “NOPE,” I say immediately, backing up. “Do you know what that looks like? A horror movie opening scene. I am not getting eaten by a tree.” “You’re going in,” he says calmly.

And it's comical how my darling husband is nowhere to be found after the scene he just pulled. World's No. 1 Asshole. Marco pulls out a flask from his jacket and takes a swig, he eyes me, probably waiting for me to ask. "Fuck it," I mumble and grab it from his hand. I down most of it before he stops me. "Whoa, whoa, easy there girl." he laughs a throaty laugh, an attractive one I must admit. "It's been a couple of rough weeks." I roll my eyes at the thought of it.
