Always same. By two, the penalty memo hit my inbox: Notice of Withdrawal — Co‑Branding Arrangement. I signed the acknowledgment and sent it to Legal before I could talk myself into a cleaner compromise that didn’t exist. Fifteen minutes later, Jana forwarded a snide comment thread about “corporate retreat from community.” I stared at the screen until the words blurred back into pixels.

(Her POV) The mistake isn’t loud. It doesn’t arrive with a slammed door or a raised voice or a public outburst that people can point to later and say, There. That’s where it went wrong. It arrives wrapped in legal language. Which is how I know it matters. I’m reviewing the first official finding again when the draft memo reaches me—not circulated widely, not yet. Someone sends it “for awareness,” which is another way of saying this is going to hurt, and I don’t want to be the only one holding it.

It brought back memories I did not want right now. My mother led us into the sitting room. Soren stayed near the doorway as I sat down opposite her. She did not sit immediately, she stood beside the chair, watching me. “What happened?” I reached into my bag and pulled out the copy of the memo. My mother's eyes fell on the page. She got down from the bed and ran out of the room to share the good news with Malachi, and as she stepped out, she saw a note in front of her toe. She picked it up and readout. “Go to the dinning?” She smiled and walked to the dining to meet the table set. She saw another note on the table and read the instruction. “Sit down.”

“It’s underperforming because the company chose to reduce the budget and stick rigidly to the memo. Any shortfalls will be absorbed by the company. My idea was sound, the execution was limited. Full stop.” The room falls silent. A few nod, impressed, while the others look a little sheepish. I smile faintl. I head to my office, sliding the door closed behind me. “Sasha,” I say when my assistant arrives with a stack of papers, “what’s on my desk?” She holds up a file. “Muse & Co. They’re selling out their real estate company. They want you to draft the campaign memo.” I raise a brow. “Who are they selling it to?”

The room feels suddenly smaller. Too quiet. Too tight. On the tablet, my name still sits at the top of the transaction record. Recipient: Alessandra Valez Date: Two days ago Money transferred from Margaret Lawson’s shell account.
