I notice that Blake followed me. I look at him and he nods at me before I face back to the other three. Tyler has walked to the other side of the room and pulled a picture off the wall showing a keypad. He punches in a code and the wall slides to the side. You couldn’t even tell there was a door there. No seem or anything that was noticeable. Tyler walked ahead and down the dimly lit corridor. We walked for a few minutes before we came to an opening with a silver closed gate. There is a small key pad in front of it. Tyler puts the code in then places his hand on it before it opens up.

The conference room door opened, and Jason walked in, a victor's smile on his face. "Oliver, Uncle Peter is looking for you." He shot me a glance, his eyes full of contempt. Oliver immediately put on a smile. Before leaving, he said, "Rex, tomorrow at nine, go to Jason's office and explain the code to him. Two hours a day, every day. All right?" He said "all right," but his tone was nothing but an order. I stood alone in the now-empty conference room, overwhelmed by a humiliation I had never felt before.

Helena cooed, flicking her finger over the raised number on her own key. Camille nodded at Helena's statement and replied, "Well, I'm in room number three. It should be the first one we come across." I counted the doors as we passed, noting the differences in each one. While one door was a deep maroon shade with golden etching, another was a blinding shade of white. Confusion flashed across my face as I looked at the number thirteen, made from a golden metal, as it sat on the door. The white door was equally strange, sitting on a light blue plaque, the number nineteen shined brightly. As we approached the third door, I felt a frown form on my face. However, I’m not a regular person and I know that the door conceals something illegal. “That’s lovely and all, but what I care about is what is behind that door.” I point to the door that has been holding my attention since we entered the breakroom. Nico forms a smug grin. “I knew you were smart. Come on, to the real business.” Nico says as he puts in a passcode to the keypad on the door. I should have noticed the keypad, but I’m honestly trying to keep in whatever crazy shit Nico has going on.

I hope there is some allowance for a learning curve here because I am going to need it. “Your roommate, Mim, is downstairs in the library working. Once you get dressed, you can head down to join her. She will give you directions today. The library is on the bottom floor. Go through the kitchen. Go out the middle door, take the third hallway to your left, and the library is the fifth door on your right.”

I move right and we cut through the corridor in under a minute, and I feel the burn in my shoulder where something caught me on the way through but I don't stop moving, because stopping is for later. The panel that looks like a wall is exactly where Adrian said it would be — third door on the right, a seam running floor to ceiling that you'd only find if you knew it was there. The code panel is behind a false bracket. I punch in the sequence Adrian relayed to me before we left, and it opens.

“It’s a stalling tactic. A show of power.” Mimi stepped forward, her eyes already scanning the lines. “It’s more than that. It’s the first test.” Her fingers hovered over the keys. She didn’t hesitate. Her typing was swift, assured. She deleted three characters, inserted two others, and hit enter. The scrolling code froze. The red highlight turned green. The metal door emitted a deep clunk and slid open. William looked at her, a surge of awe cutting through the dread. “How did you know?”

It’s the first sign of humor I’ve seen in a while from him and at all today. We walk behind a row of computers and come to a stop. Nickolas reaches to a portable keypad nestled in the mess of cords on the table behind the computers and punches in a quick code. It was too quick for me to get the whole thing but it's five or six digits and the first three are 769. As soon as the code is in I hear a thunk and Nickolas reaches down to pull open a trapdoor, just sitting there in the ground. What?

I walk up the stairs after my men move around, and when I reach the third floor, every door is closed, and I stop in front of 314. I grip the door handle, and when I try to open the door, it’s locked. I look at the camera on the corner of the corridor, raising both my hands in signal so Thorn can open the fucking door, and almost immediately, the door clicks open, and I smile, opening the door to find the room empty.

Right door, somewhere near in my name, digit considered to be jinxed and feared. Fingers twitching, I decipher the code engraved in its surface, knowing the only way forward is to unlock its secrets. As I tried to combine the keywords that corresponds to each room, I stand still as if the door stares at me, mocking me with its secrets. I know it will grant me the answers I seek, but only if I can solve the riddle presented to me. It was as if no matter how long I stand motionless in front of it, the door will remain firmly shut until I can solve the puzzle presented to me. One by one, I carefully piece together the keywords that are necessary to open its mysterious gates.
