Water trickled off his broad shoulders and back, sketching a scene that made my heart race. My breathing became shallow and rapid.

“Miss me?” I didn’t move. Neither did Kael. The second me—this mimic, this shadow—tilted her head in perfect imitation. Same mouth. Same eyes. Same voice. But it wasn’t me. I could feel it in my bones. Kael reached behind his back slowly, fingers brushing the hilt of his dagger. “Don’t,” I whispered. “It wants you to react.” Fake-Me smiled wider. “You always were clever, Amara. But not clever enough to keep him.”

Xves jumped between us. The mimic changed angles mid air. Straight toward my mother. I screamed. “Mom!” She lifted her gun at the same second the mimic launched. Two things happened at once. A gunshot exploded. The mimic jerked. Then another figure stepped out from behind the far pillar. A shadow. Tall. Calm. Waiting. The mimic stumbled for the first time since entering the hallway. And the figure finally spoke. “You weren’t supposed to activate that unit yet.” My mother froze. Liam froze.
