Chapter Forty: Jailbreak She started out having pleasant dreams, with events that had never happened. In one, she was little more than a toddler, and Sam was showing her how to fly a kite. The kite wasn’t entirely right though. As she squinted, it turned into a phoenix with a burst of fire that singed the kite string and allowed the bird to fly free. The child version of her in her dream was enchanted by the sight and continued watching it until she realized the clouds were gathering, and the sky had darkened. The phoenix disappeared with another flash of fire, and then she realized she was no longer in the park.

I stare down at the bird and I am drawn into its eyes. I glance back at the book. "Yes.. that does mean they won't know if it's gone for a few hours. The masters aren't even here.. they don't even come.." I trail off my gaze shifting back to the book. I can't help myself when I snatch the book, walking quickly out of the aisle as if I was afraid some master would show up. He howled so long and so hard that it caused the snow to shake from the roof, and the fairies flew from their nests deep inside of the trees, in a beautiful uproar of color and tiny crying sounds. Pearl and Justin were almost back to the cave behind the waterfall when Mister's sad cries reached their ears, causing Pearl to stop dead in her tracks and perk her ears up in that direction. Justin looked at Pearl to try to tell her that they needed to keep moving. She dropped her head and continued on to the cave, carrying the old queen's book in her mouth as carefully as possible. She knew that she was doing the right thing, no matter how bad it hurt.

She felt it was washing over her, cleansing her, allowing her to let go of her past, to let go of everything. Just when Caitlin felt her first hunger pang, started to wonder when lunch might come, she suddenly heard a loud screeching overhead. She leaned back, covered her eyes from the sun, and scanned the skies. It didn’t sound like the usual bird. Blake must have heard it, too, because he also leaned back and scanned the skies. As they both watched, a huge falcon circled over them, again and again, coming in lower and lower. To Caitlin’s surprise, it finally dove right at them, setting down on the stone wall. It stared right at her and screeched, defiant.

I paid, brought my luggage over to the right building, and walked up to the door. The fingerprint lock did not click when I put my thumb to it. Flabbergasted, I tried again, but nothing happened. I keyed in the string of numbers I remembered—my birthday and my mother’s birthday combined—but it still did not work. The red light from the keypad flashed at me. The unease I had felt since reaching the place intensified. I called Jon, but he did not answer. I called Mom, and it rang for a long time before she picked up.

"Then they throw the original hatchlings out one by one, stealing the entire home for themselves." "Smart girl..." Matteo murmured, his large fingers slowly clamping around my jaw, rubbing his thumb over my full, swollen lips. A sudden wave of intense fascination rippled through his gaze. "Tell me then... while the Cuckoo bird is busy occupying the nest, what do the pretty, innocent little doves do?" I swallowed hard. The friction of his thumb against my lips was already sending a twitch of electric wetness right back into my core. "They sit quietly... waiting for someone to toss them a few breadcrumbs..." I whispered.

Logan nodded, “Aye, we do the same.” Susanna nodded in understanding as she picked up the story where Kate left off. “So, she was sitting in the tree next to Daddy with tape over her mouth and we see two little chipmunks run across the branches above us. Now, I don’t know if you remember the story of the White Queen and her Seven Minions but the hero of the story is, of course -” Susanna stopped as Nate snorted loudly. “The chipmunks,” Nate said with a laugh. His eyes twinkled merrily.

The little boy hid under his bed. The light from the window reached his dim spot, and it allowed him to read his book. It was a fable about a crow who dressed up to be king. The god of fowls and other feathered creatures trumpeted that he would be naming the most beautiful of all the birds as the king. The news immediately ran around for all was thrilled with the announcement. Who doesn’t want to be king? Everyone wanted to be the king. All of them started grooming their selves to be more attractive than the other feathered creatures.

Theia nods to say she understands. “And before you could say cakes and bagels. With a cry of whey, Fred flew away. And gingerbread Fred said, run, run, run. As fast as you can. You can’t catch me … CRUNCH, SCRUNCH, MUNCH. Fox ate him for lunch. And gingerbread Fred said nothing ever again,” Becca reads to the twins. She’s so engrossed in her story telling that she hasn’t noticed us arrive. “Well that was bloody terrifying. Are you sure that’s a children’s book?” I laugh. Making her jump.

Bells jingled, and a young woman behind the counter gave me a nod before turning back to her book. I didn’t know what I was looking for. Maybe something to help me understand Aaron. Maybe a way to find a language I’d never learned—one that didn’t involve boardrooms, silence, or avoidance. In the children’s section, I ran my hand along the spines until one caught my eye. A story about a fox who had no name. Who wandered from home to home trying to remember where he belonged. Too on the nose? Probably but I bought it anyway. Back in the car, I stared at the cover for a long time. I didn’t even open it. Just held it.
