Cooper. As soon as Kenna steps outside at the playground, she is met with a couple of boys playing near the sandbox while another boy is playing alone near the slides. Kenna is left furrowing her brows as she realises that there are only boys here in the playground . . . leaving her head towards the swing, gripping tightly onto the sides as she gets on. The swing begins to move back and forth as she looks up at the blue sky, attracting her. Her hands are loosening the grip onto the sides before her lips curved up into a small smile, enjoying the birds chirping on the branches.

DAY. The playground dazzles under the afternoon sun with a myriad of small children dotting the expanse. Children swing on the swings, some roaming about with snacks and confections both sweet and savoury. Screaming their childish obscenities, or just the names of their friends across the clean, well-maintained playground. Gael sits at the edge of the sandbox, all by his lonesome. Reading his book. Lost in the world of Tom Sawyer, without any distraction hindering him.

*SATURDAY | 4:00PM | ELENA’S APARTMENT | IKoyi | PLAYGROUND BY THE SWIMMING POOL* The afternoon sun was melting into gold. Elena’s apartment had this corner nobody used for business. A small playground. White swing set with blue seats. A tiny yellow slide. Rubber mats in bright colors. Hibiscus and bird-of-paradise plants in big white pots. Maybe a nice walk will be good. I grabbed my shoes and made my way outside. I decided to walk around the other side of the pack house. The path was brick with flowers all around the landscape. I faintly heard some laughing and I found myself walking towards it. There was a playground off to the side. It was a simple playground of a slide, monkey bars and multiple ropes for kids to swing on. There seem to be about 10 3-4 year told kids playing and next to that was an infant/baby play around with the 1-2 year olds playing on a smaller version playground. There was about 6 kids there. The space opened up suddenly, leading into a large outdoor area. A wide playground stretched out before us, filled with children running, shouting, laughing without restraint. Some chased each other, others played in small groups, their joy filling the entire space. Among them were familiar faces, the kids from Black Ridge. We moved closer, and the moment their eyes landed on me—

“Yes! Very!" His excitement made my heart twist again — warm and worried at the same time. I had suggested the playground for a reason. Something open, neutral and familiar.
