“With him? Why? We don’t do that. We never do that.” Varek leans back in his chair, arms crossed. “Why are you tense? This isn’t a trap yet. Could be negotiation. Could be posturing.” I don’t say anything for a second. I let the room hold the weight. My wolf paces. “It’s a trap,” she says finally. “It’s never just talk.” “I know,” I reply softly. “But refusal says something else. Weakness. Fear. Retreat. I can’t give them that.”

he told the boy, and there it was—the ugly, stupid sentence at the center of his grammar. The boy looked at me, then at my mother, then at the ropes on the ground, then at his own empty hands. He raised his chin. He did not say yes. He did not say no. He stood still. Sometimes refusal is a fist. Sometimes it is absence. The man who raised him had not trained for either.

“You mean to turn me in.” Ryan stepped closer, his jaw tightening. “You are wanted by the Crown. There is nothing I can do—” “You could choose, Ryan!” Her voice broke, full of hurt and disbelief. “You could choose to believe I am innocent!” He said nothing. For a long, terrible moment, the only sound was the crackling of the candle wick. Then, at last, he spoke softer, almost to himself. “Do you think it is so simple? To defy the King’s men? To risk everything I’ve built?”

Because the moment certainty needs a name, it admits it cannot stand without permission. And I was done giving it. When certainty demands a name, refusal becomes an act of war. “If they ask for you,” Kairos said quietly, “they won’t be asking for permission anymore.”

I said. “I know,” he replied. “And you’re doing it anyway.” “Yes.” The bond stirred, uneasy but not punishing. Like it was waiting to see what I’d do. “If I refuse?” I asked quietly. His gaze sharpened. “You won’t.” “That’s not an answer.” “It is,” he said. “Because refusal now would be interpreted as instability. And instability invites blood.” I looked away. This was how it happened, I realized. Not with force, not all at once. With choices that weren’t really choices at all.

He looks up. "No," he says. One word. No preamble, no elaboration, no cushioning clause. The kind of refusal that would require, if she pressed it, a reason — but she would have to press it to require one, and pressing it means acknowledging that the request was not as uncomplicated as she presented it. He watches her face.

He exclaimed, and Yoori punched him in the stomach. "Seriously?" She asked, fuming with anger. "Hasn't he heard the part where my own parents rejected me?" She mumbled inwardly as she walked away from him. Stupid Jas had only heard that her fiance had rejected her, not anything else. "Miss Yoori!" "Are we going or not?" Her assistant, Kelvin, called her after he had seen them standing outside the hotel for about half an hour. "Of course we are." "What makes you think we are not going?" She asked him. She tried to open her car door, but Jas pulled her back.
