My lungs shuddered, and then I completely broke. ​I slid down the trunk into the mud, pulling my knees to my chest as tears poured down my face. I pressed a trembling hand over my mouth to muffle the sound. ​There was no one around, but a stubborn part of me still remembered I was a Luna. Lunas did not sob helplessly in the dirt. Lunas did not crawl. Lunas did not beg. Lunas endured. ​Except... I wasn't a Luna anymore.

The others hesitated. “Next?” she said, brushing dust from her pants. The second warrior snarled and shifted, his gray wolf form charging with brute strength. Evelyn shifted too, her black wolf sleek and fast, and they clashed in a blur of claws and teeth. It didn’t take long—she dodged with ease, slamming him into the ground before pinning him by the throat. When she shifted back, her breathing was even. Controlled. Gasps rippled through the growing crowd. Kendall stepped forward, raising his voice. “This is your Luna. Rejected or not, she is one of us. And she’s not here to beg for forgiveness. She’s here to take back what Damien tried to destroy.”

I hated that most of all. His golden eyes met mine. For one breath, the hall disappeared. There was only Damien. The man who had promised my people peace. The man who had kissed my forehead and called me brave. The man I had mistaken for shelter. His expression softened. My stupid heart hoped. Then he said, “Lena Frost, I reject you as my Luna.” The words did not land all at once. At first, they floated. Impossible things did that. Luna looks at me with seriousness and concern, her eyes piercing mine. “She’s going to try to seduce him,” she says gravely, lowering her voice. “She’s going to use her charms, her wiles, her tricks to make him fall for her again. Luna moved through the motions of pack life as if she were an echo of herself, a pale ghost haunting the halls. She scrubbed the Alpha’s floors. She washed Selene’s gowns. She ladled stew into bowls and collected them again, each action so practiced her body no longer needed her mind’s permission. Her mind was elsewhere. She raised her hand to hit him but was surprised as he held her hand and pushed her backward with his other hand. She had hit her back against the wall while she prevented her head from doing the same, the stern note in Alex's voice meant nothing to her, she thought to herself while she stood up. "Take her to the darkroom". She heard Alex instruct the guards. "You won't dare, I remain the Luna and there's nothing you can do about that". She shouted at the top of her voice. "I'm sorry Catherine, but not anymore". She wasn't sure if she had heard a chuckle in his voice but it sounded like he was happy with the decision he had made.

"You are the person I want. I do not want anything. I just want you. I want those days that we used to have. Those days you promised that I was going to be your Luna, do you remember that?" "You mean when I was nineteen. You mean when you cheated on me with someone else, just because I was in a psychiatric clinic? I stayed there for just three months and healed up. He was hesitant to speak, but said it anyway. "A former Luna?" My question came out unprecedented, I had meant to ask in my head. What the hell? A former Luna? “We don’t hurt people who haven’t hurt us, especially those who are running away from something and need our help.” I look away, shame creeping up my throat. “You don’t have to tell me what happened,” he adds quickly. “But you don’t have to be afraid either.” I look back at him. His kindness is confusing. I don’t know how to trust it. “I was rejected.” The words burn my tongue. Elian tries his best not to look surprised, but I can see the cracks of sympathy and pity breaking across his face. “I was supposed to become Luna.” I scoff a sad chuckle. “But it turns out I'm not the Luna material for him.
