"From my pack." Lucas raised an eyebrow. "Your pack?" he repeated. "You mean there are more of you?" I nodded. "Yes. I was...I was their mate. But they rejected me." Lucas frowned. "Rejected you?" he said, his voice softening. "What do you mean?" I looked away, unable to meet his gaze. "They...they didn't want me. I wasn't good enough for them." Lucas didn't say anything for a long moment, but I could feel his eyes on me. "I'm sorry," he said finally. "That must have been hard."

I hated that it still existed, the shock of the soulmate symbol still in existence even though I had been rejected, and he was supposed to be dead! Who had I been fooling by thinking I’d ever really been over him? Sweat broke out over my forehead, panic seizing my lungs. Leo—my mate—had come back from the dead, or at least pretending to be dead. But he sure as hell couldn’t stay in Nampa City. Orson would lose his mind. Or was that Leo’s plan? Was he back to take back his empire from Orson? None of it made sense. If Leo hadn’t disappeared in the first place, Orson never would have taken over his businesses. And to wait two centuries?

Alpha Dwane was the man I wanted to spend the rest of my life with and I was ready to do anything to become his Luna. My plans to become his Luna were going pretty well with no problem, not until I heard a rumor in town that he now had a mate. A mate from where!! Where did a mate suddenly come from??! I could see my parents in the crowd, their faces turning a bright, humiliated red. "But the bond..." I whispered, though it felt like my lungs were filling with lead. "You’re my mate. I felt it." Liam walked toward me, stopping just inches away. He leaned down, his scent of woodsmoke blocking my senses, acting as poison. "A worthless mutt like you could never stand beside me," he hissed, loud enough for the front row to hear. "I, Liam Silva Lyon, hereby reject you, Naomi Reed, as my mate. You are nothing to me. You are a stain on this pack, and I’d rather shift and claw my own heart out than be tied to a dud like you."

After a few minutes of an uncomfortable silence, I said, “Then when I reject her, what will happen next?” “You don't have a mate. Your mate whom you rejected is a rogue, wandering around the forest. She wouldn't want to return to you after what you have done.” He yelled back at me. “She is not a rogue.” I snapped, Naomi's face clouding my memory. I didn't want to be reminded about her in my current condition but each conversation I was having always had a link to her. “Then who is she?” He asked. Now standing right in front of me, he placed his hand on my shoulder and then leaned in, “Listen, you are going to get mated to Raven tomorrow and there is nothing you can do about it.”

(Aria’s POV) “I, Liam Blackwood, reject you—” The bond snaps tight in my chest, then twists. “I reject you,” he repeats, slower, like he wants there to be no confusion. “As my mate.” The room goes dead silent. Then the whispers start. “He’s rejecting her?” “Did I hear that right?” “Of course he is. Look who it is.” My fingers go numb. Mates don’t do this. They don’t. Rejection is supposed to be a last-resort thing when the Goddess clearly made a mistake.

"And about what I want to say..." Jasmine braced herself for what was to come next. She's been rejected once, and even though the pain hurts like hell, she'll try to endure it. She can't blame Nicolai if he rejects her. She's just a stranger who barged into his life, and who on earth will want to have her for a mate; a pregnant rejected mate who has so many flaws. His rejection also wouldn't stop her from seeing the good in him. Nicolai is a good man, and that won't change.

“To keep them obedient. To keep them from seeing their own mates.” The words slid into me and detonated quietly. My mind reeled. Noah. Daniel. Their mates. Had those women been around all this time—unseen, unrecognized, unheard? Had they felt the bond tugging at them, calling them toward men who couldn’t see them? Had they felt rejected without ever being chosen? My chest tightened. Naomi flashed through my thoughts. Her pain. Her bitterness. Her desperation. Was Noah her mate? Had she been suffering all along, tethered to someone who never even knew a mate bond existed between them?

Jarod's voice called for silence, and the room went silent, it looks like everyone stopped breathing. Jarod looked down at me. "Stand up," he ordered, and I complied, my legs trembling uncontrollably. “I Jarod Threan Lucas Ludgate, reject you, Layla Niles as my mate” Jarod said before I could stop him, a sharp pain like an arrow pierced through my heart, filling my chest with sorrow, I collapsed on the floor in shock, my mate, Jarod just rejected me without a second thought. How could he! The room was filled with murmurs, I hid my face behind my hair, but it did not last long as Jarod grabbed me again and dragged me off to his room like a petty rag, my poor heart breaking, he is nothing but
