The silence was the longest yet.
"She would be," he said finally, "very disappointed in me."
"That's what I thought."
He looked at me. "And you're telling me this because—"
"Because the ritual you wrote is designed to destroy the anchor. To sever the binding." I held his gaze. "But you are the anchor. What you wrote, two thousand years ago in grief, was a ritual to unmake yourself in order to free her." A pause. "And you've spent twenty centuries interpreting that as requiring a sacrifice—a child, a hybrid, someone else's blood—to power the unmaking."
